  • A recall drill that took two days

    The situation

    A food manufacturer’s mock recall required cross-referencing paper goods-in records, production sheets and despatch notes. It passed, eventually, but the audit noted the time taken.

    What changed

    Genealogy is now a query. The next mock recall produced a complete customer list in under ten minutes, with the certificates attached.

    The situation

    A stockholder issued material certificates by finding the original, photocopying it and posting it. Requests took days, and a lost certificate meant the material could not be sold at full value.

    What changed

    Certificates are scanned once at goods-in against the batch and reissued automatically with despatch paperwork. The filing cabinet is a backup rather than the system.

    The situation

    An equipment manufacturer recorded finished serial numbers manually and matched them to customers in a spreadsheet. Warranty claims frequently could not be verified against the original build.

    What changed

  • Standard 1D symbologies, QR and DataMatrix, plus GS1-128 with application identifiers for batch, expiry and quantity. If a customer mandates a specific label format, it is a template rather than a development project.

  • The traceability, quality and audit-trail capability is built for that level of scrutiny. What it cannot do is replace your quality management system - it evidences your process, it does not define it.

  • Yes. Licence plate identifiers let a pallet or container be handled in one scan, with the batches and quantities inside it known and traceable individually.

  • Customer-specific label formats, including retail and automotive standards, are configured per customer and printed automatically at despatch. Getting this wrong causes chargebacks, so it is treated as a first-class requirement.

  • Scanning is faster than writing a number on a sheet and typing it in later, so no. What it does remove is the option of skipping the record, which is normally where traceability actually breaks.
