    The situation

    A fit-out contractor knew its overall margin annually and its job-level margin never. Loss-making work was only identified when the accountant asked why the year had been disappointing.

    What changed

    Job margin is now visible from week one and reviewed weekly. Two recurring contract types were repriced within a quarter, and a third was declined next time it came round.

  • Labour that vanished

    The situation

    A manufacturer recorded labour on paper job cards, keyed weekly, with roughly a fifth never matching a job. That fifth was absorbed into overhead and made every job look better than it was.

    What changed

    Shop-floor booking on tablets removed the paper step. Unallocated labour fell below 3%, and true product-level margin moved enough to change the pricing on two product lines.

  • By the rule you already use - machine hour rate, labour hour rate, percentage of material, per cost centre, or a combination. The rule is explicit and can be changed and re-reported, rather than being buried in a spreadsheet formula.

  • Yes. Multi-stage contracts with applications for payment, retentions, valuations and phased revenue recognition are supported, with WIP and accruals reported per period.

  • That is the point of it. The estimate is stored with the job, and actual cost is reported against it by category - so you can see whether the problem was the price, the estimate or the execution.

  • Shop-floor terminals, mobile devices, engineer apps in the field, or a weekly timesheet screen - whichever suits the role. All of them post to the same job cost record.
