Brightpearl alternative

CubeERP compared with Brightpearl

A retail operations system that scopes the project before you sign anything, which is to their credit.

What Brightpearl actually is

Brightpearl is a retail operations platform for merchants and wholesalers, covering orders, inventory, fulfilment, purchasing, accounting and CRM across multiple channels.

Pricing is bespoke rather than published, built around the shape of the business, and unlimited users are included in every arrangement. The company scopes every project at its own expense before any paperwork is signed, states that customers go live in 90 to 120 days on average, and publicly commits to recommending alternatives where it is not the right fit. That last point is unusual enough in this market to be worth naming.

Credit where it is due

What Brightpearl does well

These are the real reasons it has the customers it has. If two or more of them describe something you need, weight them heavily.

  • Unlimited users on every arrangement, which removes an entire category of argument about who gets a licence.

  • Full pre-sale scoping at their own cost, so you know what you are buying before you commit. That is good practice.

  • Purpose-built for retail and wholesale operations, with the order, fulfilment and returns workflows that implies.

  • A stated willingness to tell you when they are not the right fit, which is the same position we take.

Side by side

The differences that actually change the decision

Not a feature checklist. These are the structural differences - licensing, scope, who implements it - that determine whether a system fits, and they are the ones nobody tells you until month four.

Worth checking

Questions to put to them before you sign

None of these are faults. They are design decisions with consequences, and every one of them is answerable - so ask.

  • Retail is the design centre

The product is built around merchants and wholesalers. Manufacturing, works orders, routings, capacity planning and component traceability are not what it is for, and a business that makes as well as sells will feel that boundary.

  • Pricing is not published

Costs are quoted per business rather than listed. That allows a tailored arrangement, and it also means you cannot benchmark before speaking to them. Ask for three-year totals in writing, as you should with anyone.

  • Go-live is measured in months

The stated average is 90 to 120 days. That is realistic for a platform of this scope, but it is a project rather than a switch-on, and it needs internal resource to match.

  • Accounting is included, which is a decision

Brightpearl carries its own accounting. That is an advantage if you want one system, and something to weigh if your accountant is settled in Xero or Sage and you would rather not move them.

When Brightpearl is the better choice

If you are a merchant - selling other people’s products, or your own finished goods, across retail and wholesale channels with high order volumes and returns - Brightpearl is built for you and we are not. Their approach of scoping properly before selling is one we respect and share, and we would happily send a retail-first business their way.

If you do move

What leaving Brightpearl actually involves

  1. 1

The manufacturing line is the deciding one

If you have moved from reselling to making, the questions are whether you need bills of materials, routings, capacity and work-in-progress valuation. If the answer to two or more is yes, the conversation is worth having.

  2. 2

    Accounting has to be resolved

Because Brightpearl includes accounting, leaving means selecting a ledger - normally Xero, Sage or QuickBooks. That decision should involve your accountant early, not late.

  3. 3

    Fulfilment integrations carry across

Courier and channel connections have direct equivalents in CubeERP, included rather than licensed, so the fulfilment side is reconnected rather than re-engineered.

Questions

What people ask when comparing us with Brightpearl

  • No. We handle wholesale and distribution well, and we integrate with e-commerce platforms, but we are not built around retail merchandising, high-volume returns or omnichannel selling. If that is your business, Brightpearl is the better product.

  • No, we charge per named user. For a business with a large number of light users that may make Brightpearl cheaper, and we would say so rather than argue the point.

  • That is exactly the case where the conversation is worth having. Businesses that started as merchants and now manufacture tend to find retail platforms strong on the selling side and thin on the making side.

  • You have to have accounting somewhere. CubeERP does not include a ledger, so leaving Brightpearl means choosing Xero, Sage or QuickBooks and integrating it - which is included, not chargeable.

  • We have tried to. Brightpearl scopes projects at its own expense before selling and publicly says it will recommend alternatives where it is not a fit. Those are good practices, we have said so, and nothing on this page is intended to suggest otherwise.
